City of Las Cruces is excited to partner with Cruces Creatives as part of a Creative Industries grant. Based on the international movement, Precious Plastics, this class assumes that plastic is
too precious as a resource to send to the landfill or let get swept into the ocean. It should
be used, reformed into something new.
This course focuses on the use of recycled plastic and metal molds to shape materials for
jewelry production. Specifically, we will be using HDPE and PP plastics, including bottle
caps and scrap filament from 3D printing, to create pieces that resemble marble. Students
will have the chance to choose their desired colors and will receive instruction on
establishing connections using jewelry supplies and tools.
The course will also cover techniques from Precious Plastic, where pre-made molds will
be used to create different shapes. In addition, we will cover the basics of jewelry and
keychain making. Students will have the opportunity to explore design methodologies
through research and instructional guidance.

While this class assumes an adult audience, youth 16 years and older may attend with
their guardian.
