Banned Books Book Club - The Virgin Suicides

Thursday, August 2912:30—1:30 PMStaff Conference RoomThomas Branigan Memorial Library200 E. Picacho Ave., Las Cruces, NM, 88001

The Banned Book Club meets the last Thursday of the month at 12:30.

The Virgin Suicides by Jeffery Eugenides is set in 1970's Detroit during the decline of the auto industry, addresses the impact of economic instability on the mental health of teenagers. In light of current circumstances, including the Covid-19 pandemic, the stress and isolation youth endure is a concern.

The impact of grief and unstable family dynamics mounts as the five sisters of the novel perish.  The book is a haunting and thought-provoking look at the impact of society's objectification of girls.

The book discussion will be TEMPOS informed, (Tool for Evaluating Media Portrayals of Suicide).
