The Banned Books Club - The House on Mango Street

Thursday, September 2612:30—1:30 PMStaff Conference RoomThomas Branigan Memorial Library200 E. Picacho Ave., Las Cruces, NM, 88001

The Banned Book Club meets the last Thursday of the month at 12:30. In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, we will read the classic coming of age novel The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros. The novel is structured as a series of vignettes that cover a year in the life of Esperanza as she struggles with her identity, her poverty, and her dreams as she observes the people and events on Mango Street in Chicago. The novel is a celebration of the diversity and resilience of the Latino community. It has been banned in from school curriculums and libraries across the country, including Tucson Unified School District for the perception that it “promoted resentment towards a race or class of people.”

Copies of the book are available at the reference desk starting September first.
