Banned Books Club - Wicked

Thursday, January 3012:30—1:30 PMStaff Conference RoomThomas Branigan Memorial Library200 E. Picacho Ave., Las Cruces, NM, 88001

The Banned Books Club meets the last Thursday of the month from 12:00 to 1:00. The discussion centers around a specific banned book each month. The selection for the month of January is Wicked by Gregory MacGuire.

“Are people born wicked?” Glinda, the Good Witch of Oz, asks. “Or do they have wickedness thrust upon them?” The newly released movie “Wicked: Part 1.” is the film adaptation, directed by Jon M. Chu of the hit Broadway musical. The musical was adapted from Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, a revisionist twist on “The Wizard of Oz” (originally written by L. Frank Baum).

Maguire’s novel is deeply political and addresses on how governments, religions and communities seek out villains: scapegoats to redirect popular anger, or to compel loyalty to a truly wicked leader.
