¡Amigues! There’s power in seeing yourself in the books you read. Latiné book clubs offer a supportive space to celebrate literature together. All are invited to read about and discuss the social dynamics of our lived experience across Latiné origin or decent. Join us the third Wednesday of the month at noon for lunchtime book discussion at the Thomas Branigan Memorial Library or online via Zoom.
Our book discussion for the month of July will be Like Water for Chocolate a novel by Laura Esquivel of Mexico.
A young woman named Tita, longs for her beloved, Pedro. She can never have him because the youngest daughter cannot marry, she must take care of her mother until she dies. Tita is only able to express herself when she cooks, so part cookbook, Like Water for Chocolate includes Mexican recipes that correlate to events in the story.
You can read the book by checking it out from the reference desk starting July first or by accessing it as an e-book or audiobook on Libby and Hoopla apps.
Read the book and or see the movie! There will be a screening of the film on Monday, August 12th at 2:00 pm. Directed by Alfonso Arau, starring Marco Leonardi and Lumi Cavazon, the film will be shown in English. In the 1990’s, Like Water for Chocolate was the highest grossing foreign language film in the United States.
Chocolate served as refreshments. You can read the book by checking it out from the reference desk.
