Social Justice Reading Group meets the last Tuesday of the month to discuss an issue at a local, national or international level. A librarian will present on the featured book, but you are welcome to join the conversation having read another book on the topic or no book at all, just a healthy curiosity.
The topic for the month of March is U.S. Hostage and Wrongful Detainee Day. The featured book is Coming Home by Brittney Griner a WNBA champion, Olympic gold medalist, winner of the Best Female Athlete ESPY Award and one of Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People of 2023.
Brittney takes readers inside the horrors of her geopolitical nightmare which spanned ten months. Brittney shares the harrowing details of her sudden arrest days before Russia invaded Ukraine; her bewilderment and isolation while navigating a foreign legal system amid her trial and sentencing; her emotional and physical anguish as the first American woman ever to endure a Russian penal colony.
Brittney highlights the Bring Our Families Home campaign which is comprised entirely of the families of Americans held hostage or wrongfully detained overseas. She states " Connection to the outside world - that's what I ached for during my ten months of isolation. It's why I tell those who want to help detainees to start by picking up a pen. Write to your fellow American's and let them know you are with them... The battle to bring home a loved one is is often a lonely one." Post cards will be provided for reading group members who want to send a word of support the
